Today renewable energies, wind power and photovoltaic power generations, are growing and important as alternative energy sources. They cannot, however, supply the electric power demand, because their power depends on weather, and is unstable in time. Hence, it is very important to stabilize their output power by use of the energy storage system such as Superconducting Magnet Energy Storage (SMES).
We have been developing SMES by using the theory of nuclear fusion plasma. In this work, we show that the geodesic winding achieves the stability without loss of the high energy density based on the virial theorem.
